European Building Summit 2023

Towards a single CDE for IPD: we present the third document of the European BIM Summit online

The European BIM Summit online is already here. This Thursday, we will be holding the biggest international online congress about BIM. The event’s backbone is comprised of three round tables for debating and approving the three collaborative working documents that will be a point of reference in the AECO sector. After exploring IFC in the building process and Implementing the ISO 19650, we will be closing our review with Towards a single CDE for IPD. The round table will begin at 4 p.m. and it will be attended by the experts who drafted the document: Jennifer Macdonald, Cristina Niculescu and Manuel Bouzas. It will be moderated by Ignasi Pérez Arnal, CEO of BIM Academy and content director of the European BIM Summit.

Jennifer Macdonald is an expert in digital technologies, collaborative teamwork practices and innovation in the construction industry. She is a consultant in BIM, Smart Cities, digital engineering and emerging technologies in building at PCSG, based in the United Kingdom and Australia.

Cristina Niculescu is managing director of thinkproject Iberia, where she leads the implementation of collaboration between companies and digital technologies to help the engineering and building industries to complete their digital transformation.

Manuel Bouzas is an architect with extensive experience as project lead and in work management. He is a founding partner and director of EasyBIM, a consulting company that specialises in the evaluation and implementation of BIM methodology in the building industry.

A Common Data Environment for sharing objectives

One of the main problems in building projects is the existence of budget modifications and execution delays. This is because each stakeholder is only responsible for their specific part of the project. Communication and coordination between the parties breaks down because there is no co-responsibility.

With a Common Data Environment (CDE) for Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) we facilitate a collaborative and optimised environment that allows us to operate simply and simultaneously. This promotes cooperation and co-responsibility from the very beginning of the project.

The Towards a single CDE for IPD document sets out the steps involved in creating a collaborative platform in which all the projects stakeholders share costs and benefits, with the ultimate objective always visible.

The third collaborative working document of the European BIM Summit online is structured in the following sections:

    1. Towards collaborative common data environments: Integrated Project Delivery (IPD), information modelling for building, Common Data Environment, information life-cycle (or the four statuses of the CDE).
    2. Definition of CDE and who invent it.
    3. From Dropbox to BIM-CDE, the transition towards cooperation.
    4. When to open a CDE, when to close the CDE.
    5. Bring a CDE into your life, what you need to use a CDE.
    6. Does the BIM model’s size have an influence on the type of CDE to be used?
    7. Hiring a CDE, requirements and recommendations for owners and developers.
    8. CDE for the project delivery phase (CAPEX): Where do you want to go? The questions put in a simple language: what are the project requirements? what is your area of responsibility, early establishment of project conventions, implementation of an information/authorisation workflow process, do you need separate spaces for projects or teams? what do you already have (personnel and processes)? do you want to do everything internally? how long do you want to use the CDE for?, consider the need for ongoing reviews, costs, security, data ownership.
    9. IPD for CDE or CDE for IPD?
    10. Does the implementation of the ISO 19650 standard impact the choice of CDE platform? What is the definition of CDE in the ISO 19650 standard?, use of the ISO 19650 standard with ISO 90001, what are the requirements for a CDE according to the ISO 19650 standard?
    11. Data visualisation in a CDE.
    12. Functions and responsibilities involved in using a collaborative CDE.
    13. Benefits of the use of a CDE.
    14. I am a public agency, questions pertaining to public CDEs.
