European Building Summit 2023

Implementing the ISO 19650: we present the second document of the European BIM Summit online

Implementing the ISO 19650 is the second collaborative working document that will be debated next Thursday, November 19, at the European BIM Summit online. Just like the first document, IFC in the building process, it will be presented during the round table scheduled for 12:10 p.m, featuring the following experts who participated in writing the document: Frédéric Grand, Maria Elena Pla, Anne Kemp and Mohsen Shojaee Far.

Frédéric Grand is an expert in data product and is the coordinator of the international and standardisation area of buildingSMART France and founder of Quod Semantics.

Maria Elena Pla works in the integration of products and services of the Instituto de Tecnología de la Construcción [The Catalan Institute of Construction Technology] (ITeC) in BIM management and participates in the actions of the Comisión Construimos el Futuro [Building the Future Commission] of the same organisation.

Anne Kemp is an expert in BIM and geospatial and digital engineering, is the chair of UK BIM Alliance and a member of the Atkins international consulting company, specialising in project design, engineering and management.

Mohsen Shojaee Far is co-founder and CEO of SIMBIM, a BIM software solutions vendor and the exclusive GRAPHISOFT training centre. He is also a member of buildingSMART International.

The moderator of the second round table will be Sergio Muñoz, general secretary of buildingSMART Spanish Chapter, CEO of Laurentia Technologies and co-founder of bim+partners.

ISO 19650: the BIM ISO

The ISO 19650 standard establishes how to organise and digitise information in building and civil engineering projects that use BIM and how to manage this information. Since it was approved in 2018, it has developed three of the five annexes that it envisages.

The set of international standards included in the EN-ISO 19650 series defines the framework, principles and requirements for the acquisition, use and management of information in building and civil engineering projects and assets throughout the life-cycle, and affects all the stakeholders from the development phase through to operation.

The ISO 19650 is regarded as the BIM ISO, meaning that its imminent implementation in the sector is important. To facilitate the process, Implementing the ISO 19650 offers all the necessary guidelines.

The second collaborative working document that we will be seeing next Thursday assists us in the process of including the ISO 19650 in our organisation, in order to guarantee an efficient common data environment (CDE) in which all the team members have the information they need about the project in a structured and secure fashion. It is structured in the following sections:

  • A short history: From PAS to ISO.
  • The benefits of the ISO standards.
  • The history of the International Organisation for Standardisation.
  • What changes does an ISO produce in BIM?
  • ISO 19650 series. The ISO standard in five documents.
  • What do I need to implement ISO 19650?
  • What size should a company be in order to adopt the ISO 19650?
  • In what type and size of projects should the ISO 19650 standard be applied?
  • EIR Requirements before applying for the ISO.
  • Exchange Information Requirements (EIR).
  • Who is responsible for the ISO 19650 when the team is comprised of multiple parties.
  • The introduction of basic ISO processes to be applied in our own processes.
  • I want to be ISO 19650-compliant.
  • What do I need to do in practice with regard to information management processing? (As designator and designee).
  • Joining the ISO 19650 and LEAN construction.
  • Creation of the team to work with the ISO 19650 standard: who is included, who is ruled out.
  • How do we work in a collaborative information environment according to the ISO 19650 series?
  • List of benefits: clients, supply chain suppliers, professionals, projects, market.
